competition ::: Lest We Forget

UNESCO has launched an international design competition for the creation of a Permanent Memorial at United Nations to the honour victims of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade.

The theme chosen for the competition is : Acknowledging the Tragedy; Considering the Legacy; Lest We Forget.

Artists, designers, sculptors and other visual arts professionals are invited to submit their proposals, by 19 December 2011 the latest. The design of the memorial will be selected through an internationally acceptable, credible and transparent global competition. The actual monument is expected to be unveiled at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in 2013.

With this permanent memorial, the international community wants to ensure that the world will never again endure another tragedy of such immense proportions, which today is commonly referred to as a crime against humanity. The memorial is aimed at honouring the victims of this crime

logo competition

Architechnophilia is seeking a creative new logo design. The ideal logo should that embody the idea and mantra that "Architecture is a beautiful thing to love, and an even better thing to share."

The logo must be designed primarily for screen use (Internet, TV, video etc) however it should be easily transferrable on print on newspapers, magazines, letterheads or various promotional items (pencils, caps, etc).

The logo can be graphic or text-based or any combination of these and other graphic formats. It must be easily recognizable and any text should be easy to read. The design must be able to be printed in black & white or colour (if applicable). And the size must be adjustable from very small to large.

The designer of the winning entry will be receive 100 business cards courtesy of MOO, makers of premium postcards and business cards. Winners will also receive a showcase business card holder perfect for storing and displaying your cards.

Submissions are due at midnight 4th November 2011 and must be uploaded to the flickr page. Participants can submit a maximum of 3 works.

ContestA is hosting a new contest called ROOFTOPS WHY NOT? The competition seeks both functional and architectural considerations of any kind of roofs (flat roofs, sloped, gabled, rooftops… on towers, houses, blocks, urban centers, etc). And asks;

• What uses are more convenient for a rooftop?
• Which roofs are more interesting?
• Who will be the user?
• Where should it be located?
• How large should it be?

The James Dyson Award is an international student design award running in 18 countries. It’s run by the James Dyson Foundation, James Dyson’s charitable trust, as part of its mission to encourage the next generation of design engineers to be creative, challenge and invent.

competition ::: SLANT magazine

The July 2011 issue of SLANT magazine is launching a competition, open to all, to design a garden for a private residence. The house in question is not a real house, it has been designed specifically for this competition, and its location is not being specified. The “blanks” or “options” in the brief are deliberate, and the opportunity on offer to the entrants is that they can fill in the blanks in any way that they choose.

“It is a generic house and garden which could be almost anywhere in the world, and you are free to choose the country in which you would like this imaginary house and garden to be located.

Street Furniture 2001 Competition

Metropolitan areas today are complex landscapes crossed daily by thousands of people who do not necessarily have local ties, but in addition to traditional citizens, they live in there not only permanently but traverse and use them tirelessly 24 hours a day.

Given the increasing complexity of cities it is becoming more urgent to imagine new urban devices that have the ability to act as signs of a strong identity and at the same as places that protect people temporarily while offering news, information, and digital materials about the area being traversed.

The objective of the Third Edition of the Premio Lissone is to imagine a new generation of street furniture capable of helping in the creation of these new elements, urban furniture designed to meet the needs of the new city.

The competition is open to students of design & architecture, artists, draftsmen, architects and designers of all nationalities, who in the calendar year (2011) have not yet turned 36.

ADA 2011 Architecture Dissertation Award

AWR is inviting students from around the world to take part in a competition for graduate theses on sustainable architecture and design innovation. The goal of the competition is to increase and promote sustainability culture and green architecture.

Participation is open to all graduates of architecture and engineering faculties, from all over the world. The theses, whether individual or group work, must have been defended between January 1, 2009 and October 31, 2011.

Theses submitted to the competition should fall under the following categories: urban planning, architecture and technology

Haiti Ideas Challenge

The 2010 earthquake worsened an already fractured social, economic and ecological condition in Haiti. The challenges in rebuilding are many, but with it comes the opportunity to propose new ideas. This ideas competition seeks to collect design proposals of varying scales aimed at addressing complex problems.

New Competition Gives Young Architects and Designers a Forum to Discuss New Ideas and Perspectives. 72 Hour Urban Action Project

The 72 Hour Urban Action Project is an international rapid architecture and design festival. Selected teams will have three days to plan and realize their projects. Selected projects will remain on site permanently. Winners will be selected by a professional jury.

Olympic museum of Athens Student Competition

ArchMedium is hosting a competition to design a new Olympic museum in Athens, dedicated to protect and remember historical the games' moments. The site is surrounded by work representative of ancient Greek culture most notably the Acropolis. The competition is open to all undergraduate students of Architecture and related fields as well as graduate students, whose undergraduate degree is not older than 3 years.
